Peace Report 〜

Welcome to Okunoshima Island

Okunoshima is a small island located in eastern Hiroshima. It is accessible by a 15-minute ferry ride from the mainland. Known as “Rabbit Island,” the island is a popular tourist site from all over Japan and around the world.

However, do you know Okunoshima was once called “the island erased from the map?” During wartime, the Japanese military developed chemical weapons and built poison gas research and production facilities on this island. Then as well as now, the use of chemical weapons was prohibited under the international law. So the island was literally erased from the map of Japan to keep the secret. Workers were banned to tell what they were doing on the island to anyone including their families. Toward the end of WWII, the situation became desperate. Even school children were forced to engage in hard and dangerous work at the poison gas factory. Girl students made huge balloon bombs out of washi paper. In 1945, Japan lost the war and all the evidence of chemical weapon was destroyed. The Okunoshima Poison Gas Museum was built in 1988 as a reminder of the island’s dark history. There are also ruins of gun batteries, power plants and poison gas storage facilities.

After the war, National Park Resort Kyukamura Okunoshima hotel was built, and Okunoshima has transformed from a secret island to a sought-after tourist destination. Now, the island is called the “Rabbit Island” because as many as 900 wild rabbits live here, and many tourists from in and outside Japan visit the island to see the cute rabbits. It can be said that these cuddly rabbits put Okunoshima, once erased from the map, on the map again.

To sum up, the sheer contrast between the dark military past and a paradise for healthy rabbits will make your visit an unforgettable experience.
